Madelia, Minn. – Madelia Health is excited to announce that Dr. Luis A. Martinez has joined our Family Medicine practice and will be providing primary care at the Madelia Clinic three days a week, and at the St. James Clinic two days a week. He has been working in the Emergency Department at Madelia Health for several years and is fluent in both Spanish and English.

Dr. Martinez was born in Mexico and learned to speak English when he was 26 years old. He has been a doctor for 33 years and loves medicine and helping patients, especially the poor and the lonely. He completed his family medicine residency training in Southern Illinois University in Decatur, Ill., with additional emphasis and practice in urgent care and emergency settings. During his third year, Mayo Clinic Health Systems offered him a position in emergency medicine in Albert Lea, and facilitated additional emergency medicine training in Rochester. He also worked in Mayo Clinic Health System’s Austin and Owatonna Emergency Departments.

Most recently, Dr. Martinez has worked for Perham Health in Perham, Minn. He has also practiced in Hutchinson, Albert Lea, and Springfield, Ill. Dr. Martinez is Board Certified in Family Medicine by the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is looking forward to transitioning back to Family Medicine at Madelia Health.

Dr. Martinez loves to stay busy with work and travel. He belongs to the Wilderness Medical Society, the world’s leading nonprofit organization devoted to wilderness medical challenges. He has travelled to France, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina and Chile with this group. He also loves to cook and to learn languages. He is currently learning Russian.

In his practice, Dr. Martinez believes in communication and education. “No pill cures all. It is the supervision of the doctor, change in attitude, diet, exercise, and sleep that makes pharmaceuticals work better so that patients can heal,” said Dr. Martinez. He is very excited to start his Family Medicine practice in both Madelia and in St. James.

The Madelia Health – St. James Clinic will be opening in early February. Appointments with Dr. Martinez in St. James can be made by calling 507.942.6475. For an appointment with Dr. Martinez in Madelia call 507.642.5200.
